高蔵不動院 Takakura Fudo-In - O-Yakushi no Oni Matsuri 大薬師の鬼祭 Demon Festival
During the Shusho-E 修正会 rituals on the fifth day of the New Year at the Temple Takakura Fudo-In there is a ritual called
O-Yakushi no Oni Matsuri, "Festival of the Demons of Yakushi Nyorai". 12 men from nearby Atsuta, aged 25 and 42 are chosen to participate as Oni. On leap years there are 13 men.
The demon masks of the temple are made of strong thick paper and ward off evil influence for the coming year. The masks are imitations of the one's from the "Bull Festival of Kyoto" 京都牛祭 (太秦の牛祭).

鬼神集落 Onigami village
The protector deity of this village is called オボシナサマ Oboshina Sama (Fudo Myo-O).

Its festival is on the 28th day of the 3rd lunar month, now on May 8. On the evening before the festival people put their boiled vegetables in a Bento lunch box and meet at the shrine, to eat it all together. They are not allowed to eat any meat on this occasion.
Then in 1956 some brave one eat some meat and what do you say - the next day was a huge fire in the hamlet and 17 homes burned down.

Near the place where the remains of the mansion of Shuten Doji are supposed to be there is a huge boulder. There is also a place where the river flows upstream when the demons wash the bloody robes; this is where the villagers later they build the 不動堂 Fudo Hall below the waterfall 千丈ヶ滝下 Senjogataki.
Even further up in the mountain, where Shuten Doji was defeated by Raiko Yorimitsu there is now the shrine
鬼獄神社 Onitake Jinja / 鬼嶽稲荷神社 Onitake Inari Jinja.
Raiko had prepared Shinben Kidokushu 神便鬼毒酒 a special rice wine with poison for the Oni and was thus able to kill it.

a demon wanted to enter the village of Onikobe, but Fudo killed him and burned the body.
From the ashes arose many many many mosquitoes which to our day suck the blood of the people.

生駒市 Ikoma 鬼取町 Onitori Cho

En no Gyoja met a couple of Oni who were eating humans. He asked them not to do that any more but they did not listen to him. He hid in a cave but they wanted to give him human flesh to eat even there.
Then 不動明王 Fudo Myo-O comes along and pressured the couple not to eat humans any more. Now they promised to change their ways.
Zenki went to 洞川 Dorogawa (now a famous hot spring), and Goki went to 十津川 Totsukawa .

At 生駒山 Mount Ikomasan、En no Gyoja had a dream given to him by 孔雀明 Kujaku Myo-O.
He should capture the two Oni from the foot of Ikomasan and turn them into decent beings. He stayed in prayer for 21 days and on the last day, with 不動緊縛の法 Fudo Kinboku, a special ritual of Fudo Myo-O he could capture them.
So the Oni cut off their hair and became the pious disciples of En no Gyoja.

The mountain is now called Onitorisan 鬼取山 "Mountain of capturing the Demons",
and the village is still called that way, 鬼取 Onitori.

Fudo Iwa 不動岩 Fudo Rock
Once upon a time,
the bottom of the 阿蘇の盆地 Plain of Aso was a lake.
A demon tried to fill the lake with earch and carried earth to the place, but he broke the pole of his carrier. The earth fell down and this became 上萩岳 Upper Ogidake mountain and下萩岳 Lower Ogidake mountain.
The Demon became angry and pressed against the boulder 不動岩 Fudo-Iwa but could not move it. Since that time, there are the remains of the demon's head, back and both hands on the boulder.

. Oita 大分県の鬼伝説 Oni Demon Legends .

This formation was named in the Heian Period by a mountain ascetic who venerated Fudo Myo-O here. It has three Fudo Rocks, the front, middle and back Fudo. The highest Front Fudo, Mae Fudo 前不動 is 80 meters high and more than 100 meters in circumference.

There are three huge rocks on this hill in Yamaga city which are collectively called "Fudo Iwa" which means literally immovable rocks. These rocks are individually known as: Mae-Fudo, Naka-Fudo, and Ato-Fudo.
Mae-Fudo is the biggest one, and from here you have a great view of mountain and sunset.

There is a story about these rocks that once upon a time,
Fudo-Iwa and Hikodake (Mt. Hiko, located in Yamaga city) were step-brothers. Their mother always treated only Fudo-Iwa with affection because she gave birth to him, but treated the other Hikodake harshly.
One day,
the mother told them to try the pulling rope game with their neck. She said, I will give the family treasure of 3 balls handed down for long time to the winner. When they started the game, because he was always eating soft and tasty beans the head of Fudo-Iwa came off easily and fell into the Kubishi Pass where it remains turned into stone.
Now it is said
that the rest of the body of Fudo-Iwa is the Fudo Iwa at present. Because Hikodake was always eating hard beans, he grew so big and tough. There is a footpath around here to enjoy walking while looking at the seasonal flowers until you reach to the observatory.

toodaiki, toodai ki 灯台鬼 Demon with a candlestick

鳥山石燕 Toriyama Sekien

- quote -
Tōdaiki “spirit candlestick”
... According to Sekien, long ago, a government minister named Karu no Daijin was sent on a mission to Tang China. This was a period of great movement of culture and ideas between China and Japan, so nothing is strange about that. However, when the envoy failed to return to Japan long after they were overdue, the minister’s son, Hitsu no Saishō, began to worry.

Hitsu no Saishō traveled to China to search for his missing father. He traveled far and wide, and in one particular location he came across something he had never seen before: a tōdaiki — a candlestick fashioned out of a living human being! By some combination of strange drugs and sorcery, the man’s ability to speak had been removed. His body was covered in tattoos, and a large candle had been placed in his head. He had been installed on a fancy little stand like a piece of furniture.

As Hitsu no Saishō looked in puzzlement at the strange sight, the human candlestick began to shed tears. Unable to speak, the man bit into he tip of his finger until it began to bleed. He scrawled out a few characters in his own blood. Upon reading them, Hitsu no Saishō realized in horror: the tōdaiki was his own father who he had come to China to search for!

The people involved in this story are real.
Hitsu no Saishō was the nickname of Fujiwara no Arikuni, a Heian period noble who lived from 943-1011 CE. Although the story about the tōdaiki is a fabrication, it’s an interesting example of where fact and folklore intersect. Because this early urban legend involved real people who were well known to educated readers, it gives the story much more weight.

The demons have played an important role in Japanese folklore. In the past without electricity or Internet, nights were dark and frightening, especially in the ancient cities.
Oni demons help to explain many natural phenomenon.
They are part of many rituals and rites.
Many Oni hang around places of departure and divide, like city gates, rivers and bridges, crossroads or mountain passes.

The demons of the Buddhist hell are a special group, and are quite fearful in the imagination of humans.

Mikaribaba, Mikari Basan 蓑借り婆さん / ミカリバアサン "old hag Mikari"
みかり婆

- quote
Mikaribaba
In Yokohama and Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, the Chiba Prefecture, and Tokyo etc., they would visit people's homes on the 8th day of the 12th month and the 8th day of the 2nd month on the lunisolar calendar, and they are said to borrow sieves and human's eyes. They are said to visit people's home together with a hitotsume-kozō.。

mekago 目篭 / 目籠 to catch the evil.

In order to avoid a mikaribaba, one would leave a basket or zaru at the entrance of the home, and it is said to be effective to put the tip of a rod into the bamboo basket and make it stand on the ridge of the house's roof. It is said that this is in order to make the one-eyed mikaribaba make it seem like as if there were plenty of eyes (stitches).

At the Ura no Yato, Toriyama town, Kōhoku-ku, Yokohama, an avaricious mikaribaba would even come to collect grains of rice that have fallen on the ground, and would cause fires due to the fire in its mouth. In order to avoid this, there is the custom of making a dango called the ツヂョー団子 "tsujoo dango" made from the rice left over from the garden, and put it in the doorway, as a means of saying that there is no more rice to collect.

On the 8th day of the 12th month and the 8th day of the 2nd month on the lunisolar calendar, there is a folk practice called Kotoyōka, and in the past, there were many regions where people would not do any work and confine themselves in their homes.
In the southern part of Chiba Prefecture, on the 26th day of the 11th month of the lunisolar calendar, as a period of about 10 days of seclusion in the home called "mikawari" or "mikari," when it would be taboo to go outside at night or enter the mountains and spend the time in the home quickly avoiding any big noise, lights, hairdressing, or entering bath.
Outside of the Kantō region, at Nishinomiya Shrine in the Hyōgo Prefecture and Kito, Tokushima Prefecture (now Naka), there is a practice of confinement to the house before the festival called "mikari." Rituals like these of secluding oneself in the home have been interpreted as seclusion at home due the appearance of a monster, and it is thought that those monsters are the mikaribaba and the hitotsume-kozō.
It is also said that "mikari" comes from "mikawari" (身変わり), indicating a time different from usual when one observes the practice of confinement at home.

Mikari Basan comes on the first day of the 12th lunar month. She comes with flames in her mouth, picks up any rice grains and makes dumplings so that there will be no fire.
Hitotsume no Ba 一つ目の婆 The old hag with one eye does not like baskets with many openings (eyes). She can fly all the way to Hakone, but might hit the mountains and fall into the see. So she avoids the Western direction.

This ledger is burned in the ritual fires of サイト焼 Saitoyaki on the 14th day. But she comes back on the 8th day of the 2nd lunar month.

He was a teacher of Buddhism and later became a Tengu at Mount Hakusan.
He was the second son of the samurai family of Mikami no Yasuzumi 三神安角(みかみのやすずみ)and became a monk at age 14.

He practised austerities at 愛宕山 Mount Atago together with En no Gyoja 役小角 En no Ozunu, where they met three Tengu and got special teachings and training.
While they were at the mountain, a strong rain hindered their meditation and they prayed for help.
Suddenly three Great Tengu 大天狗 appeared, Nichiryo from India 天竺(インド)の日良, Zegai from China 唐の善界 and Tarobo from Japan 日本の太郎坊.
"We have protected the Buddhist Law for more than 2000 years and helped the people who lived there."
Then they disappeared.
Taicho declared the huge sugi cedar tree 杉 where this happened「清滝四所明神」Kiyotaki Shisho Myojin and on orders from the Court built a mausoleum for the emperor where the Deity 愛宕大権現 Atago Gongen was venerated, now 白雲寺 Hakuun-Ji(愛宕神社 Atago Jinja).
(This legend became popular in the Edo period.
And thus 愛宕山太郎坊 Tarobo from Mount Atago became the Boss of all Japanese Tengu.)

Priest Taicho kept on travelling. In 117年 he climbed mount Hakusan in Echizen province and enshrined a "super Bosatsu" :
Myoori Daibosatsu 妙理大菩薩 The Godess Myori Daibosatsu.

In 717, the great Buddhist monk and teacher, Taicho Daishi, guided by a woodcutter Gongoro Sasakiri, climbed high up Mount Hakusan, an isolated sacred mountain, in order to meditate.
One night,
while Taicho was sleeping after beginning his rigorous regime of spiritual exercises, the guardian deity of Mount Hakusan appeared to him in a dream and said:
‘Lying about twenty-three kilometers from the foot of the mountain is a village called Awazu. There you will find an underground spring of hot water with wondrous, curative powers, which have been bestowed upon it by Yakushi Nyorai, the Divine Healer. However, the villagers are unaware of this blessing. Go down from the mountain and go to Awazu. With the people of the village, unearth the hot spring and it will serve them forever.’”

The roots of (Hooshi) Hoshi, the most ancient inn all over the world are truly divine. According to legend in 717 a noted monk Taicho hiked high up Mt Hakusan, a saint and isolated mountain. While Taicho was asleep one night after starting his rigid training exercises, the God of Hakusan turned up while sleeping.

He ordered him to go to a village known as Awazu as there was an underground hot spring with wondrous powers. The people of the village did not know of the good fortune. After dreaming Taicho made his way down to the village and uncovered the gem laying underneath the earth’s surface. Afterwards the priest requested his disciple to build and operate a spa at the site.

Generation after generation, Hoshi proprietors got the name 善吾楼 Zengoro Hoshi. The first Zengoro guided Taicho Daishi to the top of Mt. Hakusan. Quite a few people undergoing illnesses visited the spa built. People started making donations. He then used the money to expand the services he offered.

This mountain is one of top 5 mountains in Echizen. Many holy and miraculous spots are found there, such as 'Zao Gongendo' that Taicho Daishi is said to have enshrined. The procession is in memory of Taicho coming down from the mountain. Taicho is represented by a man age 36, the same as Taicho at that time.
There are yamabushi 山伏 mountain priests blowing the horagai ほら貝 conch and young boys holding torches.
When the procession reaches the center of the village,

Once upon a time
a man saw smoke coming from the side of the mountain. When he went there, he found a priest and two companions. The priest said his name was Taicho and asked the man to lead him to the village.
The villagers thought the deity of Mount Hakusan had come down from the mountain and performed a welcoming dance for the group.

During a drought, a farmer said he would give his daughter in return for someone who would put water into his rice fields. Out of nowhere there came a young man who did it in just one night. He was the huge serpent from the river pool at 輪島川 Wajimagawa and now tried to get his bride. He wound himself around the house seven times and then get into the entrance, but inside was a large crab which managed to cut the serpent into nine parts. Where its bones fell down there are now nine ponds. The place where the head fell down is called
Oyaike 親池 "Main Parent Pond".
Near that pond a family named 笠原 Kasahara came to live as an incarnation of the vengeful spirit of the snake.
When Taisho heard of the story, he came down and used his spiritual power to break the curse of the family.
