guhin kuhin gubin 狗賓 / 狗嬪 / グヒン Guhin Tengu Yokai monster

- quote -
The Guhin is a kind of a tengu with anthropomorphic wolf/dog appearance.
They are thought as the messengers of Kami (Gods, natural objects, the spirits that living in the trees or forces of nature) and their job is supposed to be maintaining the formal relationship with mountains and humans. So, basically, they are pacific creatures, but if a human disrespect that relationship, it is thought that a Guhin may hurt that human.
They are in the bottom of Tengu rank, but they have more opportunity to communicate with humans. They have in common with the werewolves only the feral appearance.
- source : anime.aminoapps.com/page/blog/werewolves... -

..............................................................................................................................................

- quote -
Creatures that do not fit the classic bird or yamabushi image are sometimes called tengu.
... for example, tengu in the guise of wood-spirits may be called guhin (occasionally written kuhin) (狗賓 dog guests), but this word can also refer to tengu with canine mouths or other features ...
... In the 1764 collection of strange stories Sanshu Kidan (三州奇談), a tale tells of a man who wanders into a deep valley while gathering leaves, only to be faced with a sudden and ferocious hailstorm. A group of peasants later tell him that he was in the valley where the guhin live, and anyone who takes a single leaf from that place will surely die.
In the Sōzan Chomon Kishū (想山著聞奇集), written in 1849, the author describes the customs of the wood-cutters of Mino Province, who used a sort of rice cake called kuhin-mochi to placate the tengu, who would otherwise perpetrate all sorts of mischief.

Ainodake 間ノ岳 Mount Ainodake, Mount Aino

- quote -
Mount Aino
a peak of the Akaishi Mountains−Southern Alps, in Minami Alps National Park, Japan.
At 3,189 m (10,463 ft), it is the fourth tallest peak in Japan and the second highest in the Akaishi Mountains. Its peak lies on the border of Aoi-ku and Shizuoka in Shizuoka Prefecture, and of Minami-Alps in Yamanashi Prefecture.
- - - - - Mount Aino is one of the landmark 100 Famous Japanese Mountains.

- Mount Aino and Mountain Hut Kita

Within the Akaishi Mountains, Mount Aino is situated roughly 3 km (2 mi) south of Mount Kita, the ranges' tallest peak. Together with Mount Nōtori (農鳥岳 Nōtori-dake) to the south the three mountains may be referred to as Shiranesanzan (白峰三山 / (しらねさんざん) Shirane sanzan).
..... Mount Aino, like most of the Shiranesanzan, abounds with alpine plants. The neighborhood of the summit is dominated by rocks where few plants can survive. It is conceivable that landslides around the summit have led to the growth of linear hollows. ...

間ノ岳の鬼面雪形 The Demon Face of Snow on Mount Ainodake

On the side facing Nagano there is a slope where the snow looks like the face of an Oni demon. It is best seen from 宮田村 Miyada village in Nagano.
This mention of a 鬼の面 Demon Face was made with appreciation for the snow formations on the mountain slope and does not imply the dangerous side of an Oni.

In Spring, when the snow melts, the face slowly becomes visible. In former times this was an important sign for the farmers to start working in the fields.
There are other snow patterns becoming visible in Spring in these mountains as indicators for the farmers.

onimen 鬼面 demon mask
There was a rumour that a demon was walking along in dark nights, so they put up a sign at 古宮 the old shrine to warn people.
Some villagers wanted to teach a lesson to a vigorous friend. So he had to get out early, putting on the white robes of a dead person and hide on top of Torii gate of the shrine. The others followed slowly, a bit frightened, and put on red Demon masks. The guy on the gate became afraid and fell right down. The others laughed merrily.
.
Once a traveling 能楽師 Noh-Master stayed over night in an old temple hall. Since it was so cold, he put a demon mask over his face to sleep. Some other people around thought it was indeed an Oni !

Omonogawa-River - The Shore: The Relationship Between Man and River
The source of Omonogawa-River springs from Akita and Yamagata prefectures. Located at the border of Daisenyama-Mountain that stands at 920m above sea level, it provides fresh water to the famous rice-producing Yokotebonchi-Valley.

Stretching 133km long, Omonogawa-River is a relatively calm river. It flows from the capital of Akita Prefecture.
In the past,
Akita had an extended shipping system and Omonogawa-River was used as one of its main transportation medium for rice crops and Japanese cedar lumber.
Currently,
the river system supports disaster prevention measures. It also creates and manages outdoor leisure centers for the benefit of the residents of the valley, reducing at the same time, the gap between man and nature.
To this effect, the city of Omagari, which has a history of more than 80 years of firework-producing technology, holds a national competition that attracts more than 10,000 spectators every summer to its riverbanks.

The Japanese Festival Where Demons Beat Up Kids with Sticks

In a small town in Hiroshima called 小屋浦 Koyaura, the third weekend of every October is the autumn festival. A festival the children of the town dread.
..... Terrifying demons known as マッカ(赤鬼)‘Makka’ (all red) chase the children of the town and when he catches them they get a savage hit with a stick.
Sometimes the demon will also attempt to kidnap the child.
The only thing that can abate the demon is if the child promises to be good from now on. Parents even willingly give their child up to be beaten and kidnapped.
This tradition, native to Koyaura is over 100 years old. ...

masks of Tengu (L), Kuro-oni (C) and Aka-oni (R)

- quote -
The Demon Festival has been carried on since around 940 in the Heian period (794-1192)
and was designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1980.
On the festival eve (Feb.10), it's started with Iwato-no-mai dance.
The heros and heroines of this day are boys and girls.
The main event of this festival is called "Aka-oni to Tengu no Karakai /rivalry between Aka-oni (Red Demon) and Tengu (long-nosed goblin)".
(literal meaning of karakai is raillery, but it's totally rivalry)
The story performed by the red demon and Tengu has come from Japanese mythology.
A destructive god ( Susanoo-no-mikoto = red demon) appeared in Takamagahara (lit. "high heavenly plain", where gods live) and destroyed the granaries.
A god of martial arts (Sarutahiko-no-mikoto = Tengu) fought to chasten and straighten him out.
Then all the gods felt happy and danced kagura.
People innovated dengaku performances, which soaked up this story, to a Shinto ritual festival, and to pray for a rich harvest and prosperity.
Aka-oni walks zigzag (Zigzag walking symbolizes lightning. Lightning is caused by Oni on a cloud by the Japanese folk tales)
***
During the climax of this festival,
Red Demon repeatedly provokes battle with Tengu, but is defeated.
He escapes from the shrine yard and runs around the town scattering tankiri-ame (candies made from grain powders) and white grain powder over the visitors to drive out the evil.
Kuro-oni (Black Devil = Ame-no-koyame-no-mikoto of the mythology) fills the role of judge.
It is said that if you are showered with this powder or eat tankiri-ame, you will not get ill during the summer.
Lots of visitors are excited to get tankiri-ame and a powder shower.

Demons who live on the sea off Takezaki and the demon masks which are kept prisoner in a box (onibako 鬼箱) in the Kannon Hall try to get out on the fifth day of the New Year and call out to each other to overthrow the island. To prevent this, the villagers have to shout even louder to protect their island - the orabigoe おらび声 heavenly voice.
The villagers are only clad in a fundoshi ふんどし loincloth, so this is a famous hadaka matsuri 裸祭 naked vestival.
