Gunma, Fujioka town 群馬県藤岡市
Onishi 鬼石町 Onishi-machi was a town located in Tano District, Gunma Prefecture.
鬼石町(おにしまち)は群馬県多野郡にあった町。
On January 1, 2006, Onishi was merged into the expanded city of Fujioka.



Oni no Ishimaru 鬼の石丸
He is the symbol of the shopping arcade and appears at the Setsubun rituals.

The region produced many stones 石の産地.
The protector deity of stones was called 鬼石明神 Onishi Myojin and is known at least since 1703.

Daibagami (daibakami) だいば神 / 大馬神 is a strange illness of horses.
All of a sudden the hind legs can not move any more and soon after the animal dies.
This disease only occurs from April to August.

The story about the onishi 鬼石 Oni Rock in 東内村 Higashi-Uchimura.
Around 1916 a new road was to be built and this stone had to be moved. Below it a huge kyuushi 臼歯 molar, bigger that that of a horse or bull, was found.
People thought it was oni no ha 鬼の歯 the tooth of an Oni.

茅野市 Chino town

The mountain range of Tateshina 立科山麓 and the name of CHINO.
Near 北山村 Kitayama village there is a stone with 鬼の足形 the footprint of an Oni, called 鬼石 Oniishi.
Where the Oni was driven out is a place called 鬼場 Oniba, and where his blood came down the river is
Chino 血野 "bloody field".
Where the Oni was burned and the ashes scattered around is now 灰原田 Haibarata.

At the pass 佐野坂峠 Sanosaka Toge there is a Demon Stone.
It has been touched by an Oni and to our day shows the marks of his hands.

Oni are born out of the imagination of human beings - they have the physical characteristics of things humans fear, mostly in animals.
Their appearance changed during the long history of Japan, from the Heian period to our present popular Setsubun-Oni.

Some Oni show fangs upward, some downward, some have one fang up and one fang down.
Many masks also have a closed mouth.

Emori えもり瀬兵衛 (せへえ) Emori Seei
Emori was able to buy something special. He got a tooth from a person living in 八丈島 Hachiojima, where the original inhabitants were said to be Oni.
The tooth was about 3 cm long and 6 cm wide.

When a child looses an upper tooth, it has to throw it under the veranda and chant
nezumi no ha to tokkaero 鼠の歯ととっかえろ Change this into the tooth of a mouse.
When it looses a lower tooth, it has to throw in on the roof and chant
oni no ha to tokkaero 鬼の歯ととっかえろ Change this into the tooth of an Oni.
Thus the new tooth will grow strong and healthy.

Sutten Doji 酒顛童子 / スッテンドウジ Shuten Doji
Shuten Doji was beheaded by Minamoto Yorimitsu and his head flew up into the sky. Then it came down and landed on the helmet of Yorimitsu. With his strong teeth of an Oni it started to bite off the layers of the helmet and almost succeeded, leaving just one layer before it was chased away.

When Sakanoue no Tamuramaro drove out the demon of this region, the teeth of this Oni were left over.
The boss of the native 蝦夷 Emishi group was called 赤頭 Akagashira. - alias Aterui アテルイ / 悪路王 Akuro-O / Acro-O 阿弖流爲 (? - 802)

Tamuramaro built a grave for Akagashira and offered a statue of Kannon Bosatsu to appease his soul. This is now at the temple 竜福山・長谷寺 Hasedera.
When they dug out the grave in 1704, they found 33 teeth in the skull of this Akagashira Oni.
ケセンの鬼の国 Kesen is the land of the Oni.

青い鬼と赤い鬼 green and red Oni
A green Oni and a red Oni fought about their territory and begun to throw stones at each other. The clever Red Oni won the battle.
The green Oni said: "If you put on a 蓑笠 straw coat and clean the well, I will make it rain!" and jumped right into the sky above the clouds. The 天の神様 Kami in heaven thought this was kind of funny and made more Oni in various colors.

akai hi 赤い火 red flames
If someone passed the graveyard after sunset, there were red flames hopping around to be seen.
Two or three blue Oni spit fire and ate it again, amusing themselves with the red flames.
When a brave samurai went there to check out the real reason, there were some beggars sitting on the ground, sticking burning leaves of local potatoes in their nose and blow them out.

oni ningyoo 鬼人形 demon dolls
A craftsman with special skills made a carving of 酒顛童子 Shuten Doji for the festival float, with a red and blue demon at its side.
But the wandering souls of a young couple that had committed suicide in dispair begun to stick to the float.
鬼人形 demon dolls of the two were made and hung outside to make their spirits go away.

A red, blue and black Oni carry a kanabo 金棒 Demon's pole with a basket. In it are three dead men.
The black Oni carries a dead Geisha on his back. She is wearing three kanzashi 簪 hairpins.

大笹生の黒鬼伝説 Black Oni legend from Ozaso
In the North-West of Fukushima city there is a mountain plateau called Ozaso.
Once upon a long long LONG time, there lived a black Oni.
He often came down from his mountain to eat villagers and travelers and cause a lot of trouble as 人食い鬼 a man-eating Oni.
Even the priest from a local temple was eventually eaten by the Oni.
Then one day a traveling monk came to stay in the village and heard the story. The villagers asked him to drive out the Oni, but first he refused, because he had no trust in his power to do so.
The villagers talked to him again and made him hold a memorial service for all the perished souls.
As things go, the monk stayed at the temple and became its priest after all.

One night as he slept, Dainichi Nyorai appeared at his pillow and taught him how to get rid of the man-eating Oni:

「修行者よ、黒鬼の心を静める方法を教えますからよく聞きなさい。
ここより西南、土湯の山奥、仁田沼のほとりに大きなトチの樹があります。
根元に落ちている実を広い、それで団子を三個作りなさい。

Haragosha Shrine shrine was built in the new village of the people of the Kurokami Area after they resettled following a large eruption in the Edo Period (the Annei Eruption).
The god from the shrine of their old home is enshrined here.
... This three meter-high stone torii has been buried in volcanic lava and ash since the eruption of Sakurajima in 1914, leaving just its head peeking out. It was actually completely covered but builders discovered it while doing excavation work in the process of building a school in the area. The village mayor took the decision to leave it partially buried in remembrance of the devastating eruption.

But no one showed up, and the red ogre grew puzzled, sad, and angry. "I'm such a kind ogre -- why would nobody visit me?" Despairing, the red ogre even tore down the sign: "This is useless."

Moved by his friend's feelings, the blue ogre said, "Look, I have a plan."
The blue ogre's plan was for him to pretend to terrorize children and then have the red ogre chase him off, "rescuing" them from him. The plan went without a hitch, and the red ogre became the most popular creature among the children, and all came to play with him.

After a happy day of enjoying the children's company,
the red ogre found a letter from the blue ogre.
The letter said, "My Dear Red Ogre, if people find out that you are a friend of the Bad Blue Ogre's, they will not let the children come to you any more. So, I'm leaving. Please live happily with the children. Goodbye. Blue Ogre."
The red ogre cried out,
"Blue Ogre is gone! A dear friend of mine! He is gone!" And he wept.
The red ogre and the blue ogre were never to see each other again.

昔、頓平 Tonpei という間抜け者がいた。働きもせず飯だけ一人前、唯一つ、弓を射るのが名人だった。とうとう家を追い出された頓平が、その夜道端で寝ていると、上の方のお堂で鬼たちが宴会を始めた。鬼はエンメ小槌(こづつ)をふって酒だの肴だのを出していた。頓平は鬼どもを驚かそうと一矢、また一矢と鬼を射ると、鬼たちはあわてて逃げていった。これを見た頓平はお堂に行き、エンメ小槌をふって飯、肴、家、美しい娘、馬、カゴ、と次々にそろえたが、調子にのって「俺の矢でみんな退治してやる」と「赤鬼、青鬼みんな出て来い」というと、鬼たちが大勢出てきて、頓平を殴ったり蹴ったりした挙句、深い谷間に突き落としてしまった。

刀鍛治が百本の刀を献上することになり、刀打ちを始めるにあたって、家内に仕事が終わるまで七日間絶対に鍛冶場に近寄るなと厳命した。ふしぎなことに相槌の音がするので、家内が厳命を破ってのぞいてみると、赤鬼・青鬼が相槌を打ち、主人が真っ赤に焼けた鉄を口に銜えて打っていた。家内が覗いたのを察したか相槌はやみ、鬼の姿は消えた。

Ino Heitaro 稲生平太郎 and Gonpachi 権八(Gompachi)

The year is 1749. The place is 三好市 広島県 Miyoshi town in Hiroshima.
Heitaro was a samurai of the domain.
He and his friend Gonpachi tried a contest of courage, involving an encounter with various Yokai.
This was a popular summer game reminding people of the
. Hyakki Yagyō 百鬼夜行 "The Night Parade of a Hundred Demons" .

In May they went up to 比熊山 Higumayama and lit 100 candles. Now each one of them had to tell a Yokai ghost story and after each story, one candle was put out.
After the last story was told the last candle was blown out and the two waited in the darkness for any Yokai to make their appearance.
Anyway,
no Yokai appeared for some time that night, so they went back home. But come July, the monsters begun to appear to haunt them . . .
And this story is told in the famous

For one month, various Yokai appeared day and night, trying to frighten Heitaro, but he never lost his calm and slept well at night.
For example, a huge toad appeared in his cupboard in the evening, with a red rope around its body . . . so Heitaro grabbed the rope and slept . . .
The next morning, the toad showed its real appearance, just the usual big box for cloths in the cupboard.




Another evening, a woman with a long neck came out of the Tokonoma niche from his room
and tried to lick him all night.
But he just ignored her completely and slept well till morning.



Eventually the Yokai gave up, praised his fearlessness and - in a swoop - disappeared from his garden.

This story soon became a picture scroll for all to enjoy.

Spooky ‘yokai’ ghost museum to lure tourists to Hiroshima

MIYOSHI, Hiroshima Prefecture--
An enthusiast’s extensive collection of paraphernalia related to the "yokai" supernatural beings of Japanese folklore is to be housed in its own museum as part of efforts to attract more visitors here.
The city government decided to construct a purpose-built museum to showcase about 3,000 yokai items amassed by Koichi Yumoto forming the main attraction. The museum is scheduled to open in 2018.

“I want to hand down to posterity Japan’s original culture generated by Japanese people’s imagination,” Yumoto, 66, of Tokyo's Edogawa Ward, has said.
He started collecting yokai-related works of art about 30 years ago, and has spent more than 100 million yen ($882,450) on his hobby to date.

The collection includes precious items, such as “Hyakki Yagyo Emaki,” a narrative scroll painting depicting a parade of yokai, and the renowned ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai’s spooky tale-themed “nishiki-e” multicolored woodblock print “Hyaku Monogatari” (100 stories).

Miyoshi, located in a mountainous region, has been seeking ways to revitalize itself by taking advantage of the local “mononoke” evil spirits culture.

The area is famous as the setting for “Ino Mononoke Roku,” a story about a young man who battles with evil spirits from the Edo period (1603-1867).

Yumoto’s collection provided a perfect opportunity, and the city teamed up with the yokai enthusiast who had been looking for a facility to display and manage his collection.
Yumoto signed a deal with the city at the end of 2016 to hand over his collection for free on condition that the city would establish a museum specializing in yokai.
The total project cost is estimated at 1.2 billion yen.

“I think yokai are happy about finally having their own museum,” said Yumoto.

Miyoshi Mayor Kazutoshi Masuda expressed his gratitude, saying: “We greatly appreciate the donation of such precious materials. We would like to invigorate the city by utilizing the collection.”

Onibi (鬼火) is a type of atmospheric ghost light in legends of Japan. According to folklore, they are the spirits born from the corpses of humans and animals, and are also said to be resentful people that have become fire and appeared. Also, sometimes the words "will-o'-wisp" or "jack-o'-lantern" are translated into Japanese as "onibi."



- Outline
According to the Wakan Sansai Zue written in the Edo Period, it was a blue light like a pine torchlight, and several onibi would gather together, and humans who come close would have their spirit sucked out. Also, from the illustration in the same Zue, it has been guessed to have a size from about 2 or 3 centimeters in diameter to about 20 or 30 centimeters, and to float in the air about 1 or 2 meters from the ground. According to Yasumori Negishi, in the essay "Mimibukuro" from the Edo period, in chapter 10 "Onibi no Koto," there was an anecdote about an onibi that appeared above Hakone mountain that split into two and flew around, gathered together again, and furthermore split several times.
Nowadays, people have advanced several theories about their appearance and features.

- Appearance
They are generally blue as stated previously, but there are some that are bluish white, red, and yellow. For their size, there are some as small as a candle flame, to ones about as large as a human, to some that even span several meters.
- Number
Sometimes there only 1 or 2 of them appear, and also times when 20 to 30 if them would appear at once, and even times when countless onibi would burn and disappear all night long.
- Times of frequent appearance
They usually appear from spring to summer. They often appear on days of rain.
- Places of frequent appearance
They commonly appear in watery areas like wetlands, and also in forests, prairies, and graveyards, and they often appear in places surrounded by natural features, but rarely they appear in towns as well.
- Heat
The are some that, when touched, do not feel hot like a fire, but also some that would burn things with heat like real fire.

As onibi are thought of as a type of atmospheric ghost light, there are ones like the below. Other than these, there is also the shiranui, the koemonbi, the janjanbi, and the tenka among others. There is a theory that the kitsunebi is also a kind of onibi, but there is also the opinion that strictly speaking, they are different from onibi.

Asobibi (遊火, lit. "play fire")
It is an onibi that appears below the castle and above the sea in Kōchi, Kōchi Prefecture and Mitani Mountain. One would think that it appeared very close, just for it to fly far away, and when one thinks that it has split apart several times, it would once again all come together. It is said to be of no particular harm to humans.
Igebo
It is what onibi are called in the Watarai District, Mie Prefecture.
Inka (陰火, lit. "shadow fire")
It is an onibi that would appear together when a ghost or yōkai appears.
Kazedama (風玉, lit. "wind ball")
It is an onibi of the Ibigawa, Ibi district, Gifu Prefecture. In storms, it would appear as a spherical ball of fire. It would be about as big as a personal tray, and it gives off bright light. In the typhoon of Meiji 30 (1897), this kazedama appeared from the mountain and floated in the air several times.
Sarakazoe (皿数え, lit. "count plate")
It is an onibi that appeared in the Konjaku Gazu Zoku Hyakki by Sekien Toriyama. In the Banchō Sarayashiki known from ghost stories, Okiku's spirit became appeared as an inka ("shadow fire") from the well, and was depicted as counting plates.
Sōgenbi (叢原火 or 宗源火, lit. "religion source fire")
It was an onibi in Kyoto in Sekien Toriyama's Gazu Hyakki Yagyō. It was stated to be a monk who once stole from the Jizōdō in Mibu-dera who received Buddhist punishment and became an onibi, and the anguishing face of the priest would float inside the fire. The name also appeared in the "Shinotogibōko," a collection of ghost stories from the Edo period.
Hidama (火魂, lit. "fire spirit")
An onibi from the Okinawa Prefecture. It ordinarily lives in the kitchen behind the charcoal extinguisher, but it is said to become a bird-like shape and fly around, and make things catch on fire.
Wataribishaku (渡柄杓, lit. "transversing ladle")
An onibi from Chii village, Kitakuwada District, Kyoto Prefecture (later, Miyama, now Nantan). It appears in mountain villages, and is a bluish white ball of fire that lightly floats in the air. It is said to have an appearance like a hishaku (ladle), but it is not that it actually looks like the ladle tool, but rather that it appeared to be pulling a long and thin tail, which was compared to a ladle as a metaphor.
Kitsunebi (狐火, lit. "fox fire")
It is a mysterious fire that has created various legends, there is the theory that a bone the fox is holding in its mouth is glowing. Kimimori Sarashina from Michi explained it as a refraction of light that occurs near river beds. Sometimes kitsunebi are considered a type of onibi.

- Considerations
First, considering how the details about onibi from eyewitness testimony do not match each other, onibi can be thought of as a collective term for several kinds of mysterious light phenomenon. Since they frequently appear during days of rain, even though the "bi" (fire) is in its name, they have been surmised to be different from simply the flames of combustion, and is a different type of luminescent body. It is especially of note that in the past, these phenomena were not strange.
In China in the BC era,
it was said that "from the blood of human and animals, phosphorus and oni fire (onibi) comes." The character 燐 at that time in China could also mean the luminescence of fireflies, triboelectricity, and was not a word that indicated the chemical element "phosphorus".
Meanwhile, in Japan,
according to the explanation in the "Wakan Sansai Zue", for humans, horses, and cattle die in battle and stain the ground with blood, the onibi are what their spirits turn into after several years and months.
One century after the "Wakan Sansai Zue"
in the 19th century and afterwards in Japan, as the first to speak of them, they were mentioned in Shūkichi Arai's literary work "Fushigi Benmō", stating, "the corpses of those who are buried have their phosphorus turned into onibi." This interpretation was supported until the 1920s, and dictionaries would state this in the Shōwa period and beyond.
Sankyō Kanda,
a biologist of luminescent animals, found phosphorus in 1696, and as he knew that human bodies also had this phosphorus, in Japan, the character 燐 was applied to it, and thus it can be guessed that it was mixed in with the hint from China about the relation between onibi and phosphorus. In other words, it could be surmised that when corpses decay, the phosphorus in phosphoric acid would give off light. In this way, many of the onibi would be explained, but there also remain many testimonies that do not match with the theory that of illumination from phosphorus.
After that,
there is a theory that it is not phosphorus itself, but rather the spontaneous combustion of phosphine, or the theory that it is burning methane produced from the decay of the corpse, and also a theory that hydrogen sulfide is produced from the decay and becomes the source of the onibi, and also ones that would be defined in modern science as a type of plasma. Since they often appear in days of rain, there are scientists that would explain that as Saint Elmo's fire (plasma phenomenon). The physicist Yoshihiko Ōtsuki also advanced the theory that these mysterious fires are caused by plasma.It has also been pointed out that for the lights that would appear far in the middle of darkness, that if they are able to move by suggestion, then there is a possibility that they could simply be related to optical illusion phenomena.
Each of these theories
has its own merits and demerits, and since the onibi legends themselves are of various kinds, it would be impossible to conclusively explain all of the onibi with a single theory.
Furthermore,
they are frequently confused with hitodama and kitsunebi, and as there are many different theories to explain them, and since the true nature of these onibi is unknown, there is no real clear distinction between them.

In the year 1580, the Kuki army from Toba torched 岩屋寺本堂 the main hall of the temple Iwaya-Ji . ...
Before coming to Iwaya-Ji they torched many temples on the way and killed the priests.
In 1868, at the back mountain of the temple 正衆寺 Shoshu-Ji there were strange flames to be seen dancing around, even on rainy nights.
The villagers were surpried and begun to dig in the area. They found old swords, armour and helmets and begun to venerate them. Soon the flames stopped to appear.
It seems that was a battleground of 九鬼嘉隆 Kuki Yoshitaka, who had killed so many warious and villagers.

The Okunoin of 岩屋寺 Iwaya-Ji is still an active center for Buddhist practice.
On of the pracitces is to abstain from food for three or seven days, not make a fire during this time, walk around the trees from Midnight for one hour in the dark and other exercises.
Sometimes a huge bull stands in their way or fire balls try to prevent them from continuing.
Some hear the footsteps of many people or hear the huge sound of large stones falling on a roof.
Out of fear many disciples run away from this dangerous spot.

After that every night a strange Onibi related to the souls of the two could be seen up and down the river. The villagers held a service for their souls and the strange flame appearance stopped.
