Kaikidan Ekotoba, a mysterious handscroll that profiles 33 legendary monsters and human oddities, mostly from the Kyushu region of Japan (with several from overseas).
The cartoonish document, whose author is unknown, is believed to date from the mid-19th century. It is now in the possession of the Fukuoka City Museum.
. . .
Many Edo-period scrolls featured illustrations of unfamiliar creatures -- animals that actually existed but were rarely seen in Japan (such as fur seals and sea lions), along with creatures generally regarded as imaginary (mermaids and kappa).

The "Korean monk"
in this illustration, seen singing and playing a gekkin (moon guitar), has the physical characteristics of a kappa (water imp).

Kawataro
The kawataro is a variety of kappa (water imp) which, according to the accompanying text, likes to eat people and practice sumo. An indentation on top of the creature's head is filled with water. The kawataro becomes weak when the water spills out.

Yamaguchi 山口県

Once upon a long time
in the region of the cave Shoohoodoo 秋芳洞 Shohodo (Akiyoshido cave in Yamaguchi) there was a long period of drought and only strong sunshine. There has been not a drop of rain for such a long time, all the wet rice paddies had dried up. The farmers living there did not know what to do and worried all the time.
(In fact this was in the reign of Gomurakami Tenno 後村上天皇の正平9年 in 1354.

But it was not only the humans that were in trouble. At the Dragon Riverside 龍ヶ淵 near the cave there lived a Kappa who needed water too, and since there were so few fish left in the river, he was always hungry. So he went to the temple Jijuuji 自住寺 Jiju-Ji, because they had a special pond with carps for rituals - and indeed - he stole one carp and ate it!

Then the Kappa heared that the priest of the temple, Zen Priest Juen Zenji 寿円禅師 had retired to the cave to pray for rain (雨乞 amagoi) for 21 days.
By mistake the Kappa with his bad concious thought that the priest was certainly going to pray for his death, because he had stolen a fish from the pond. So he went to the cave too and tried to disturb the priest. But the Zen priest was strong and determined in his prayers and could not be disturbed, not a bit.

The Kappa was quite moved by his willpower and determination and asked the priest to become his disciple, so that he could help and support him with the rain prayers and rituals.

Finally the last day of the rain ritual came. The prayers of the Zen priest were answered and it started to rain heavily.
The priest went to the Dragon Riverside and stood on a large boulder.
The Kappa, when he became aware of this, tried to stop him but - it was too late.
The priest had vowed to give his own life if it would rain - so he jumped into the raging water below him.

The Kappa, eager to save the priest, jumped into the water himself. But because of the strong rain the river was quite wild and had formed whirlpools. The Kappa tried very hard to save the priest, but even the water goblin Kappa could not survive in this strong rain-flooded river and died too.

The villagers found the dead bodies of the priest and the Kappa way downriver many days later.
In gratitude they gave them a proper ritual burial.
And soon when they talked about this courageous Kappa, they called him

Kappa the Zen Priest.

The Akiyoshi Cave

- quote -
Akiyoshi-dai Plateau Area
The largest limestone karst plateau in Japan, located within a quasi-national park. The most spacious limestone cavern in the entire Orient.

Located within Akiyoshi-dai Quasi-National Park, Akiyoshi-dai is the largest karst plateau in Japan, and is a designated natural monument together with the Akiyoshi-do Cavern.

The karst topography of Akiyoshi-dai was created through a process whereby an area that was a coral reef about 300 million years ago was pushed up to the surface by the displacement of the Earth's plate, turned into a mountain through diastrophism and then eroded by the wind and rain. There you can see limestone in a variety of forms on the green plateau, like the innumerable "karrenfeld" limestone columns, sinks known as "dolines," and a limestone basin called an "uvala," formed by the merging of numerous sinkholes. From the round-shaped Akiyoshi-dai karst observation spot, you can enjoy an extensive 360-degree panoramic view of the area's natural beauty.

The Akiyoshi-do Cavern is the Orient's largest limestone cave, located about 100 meters underground. This huge cave, which took 300,000 long years to be formed into what it is today, was made by limestone dissolving away in the ground water, and it extends for about 10 kilometers overall according to the latest survey. At the present time an about one-kilometer-long section of the cave is open to the public as a sightseeing course, where you can enjoy a variety of fantastic sights, like the Ao-Tenjo (blue ceiling) and a rock formation called the Hyakumai-Zara (100 plates). The temperature inside the cave is always about 17 degrees Celsius, so you need to be sure to wear clothes with long sleeves even in the summertime.

The Legend of Zen Priest Juen
and temple 自住寺 Jiju-Ji

Kappa doing a rain ritual

Once upon a time
in the forest of a small village there was a little old swamp. In it lived a lone Kappa who often played bad tricks on the villagers.

One day a traveling priest came to the village, went to see the swamp and asked the Kappa why he would do such bad tricks. The Kappa said he was really distressed to be born as such a creature and just had to run around like wild and be bad.
When the priest heard this, he began to lecture the Kappa:

"As long as you are alive,
you should try to do something for the benefit of the humans, for the benefit of this village!"
and then the priest left.

Time went on and summer came. The sun kept shining day after day and the villagers in their distress during this drought began to think about some rain ritual to be performed.
Just then the Kappa appeared and volunteered to do the rain ritual.

The villagers were not quite happy with his proposal, but since there was no-one else they asked him to do it. The ritual continued for many days and the Kappa was not allowed to eat or drink during this time of prayers.

After a few days the sky became dark and thunder began to roll over the village. And indeed, great drops of rain began to fall, faster and faster. The rain became stronger and stronger, almost like a waterfall down from the sky.
And the Kappa, amid all that rain, died in peace.

At the end of summer the priest visited the village again and now heard the story of the Kappa calling for rain. He told the villagers of the Kappa and his wish to be reborn as a human, so the villagers made a grave for the Kappa by the swamp and put up a large memorial stone for him.

This story is kept alive in the village to our day.

Takagi Toranosuke
capturing a kappa in the Tamura River in the Sagami Province

- quote -
Dates: 1834 - 1835, created
Dimensions: 9.5 in,14.0 in, Overall dimensions
Publisher: Kawaguchiya Uhei
(Marks 232 - seal closest to 22-050) Censor's seal: kiwame

Physical description:
Sarah E. Thompson in her Utagawa Kuniyoshi: The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, #31 describes another print, different from the one in the Lyon Collection, relating to Toranosuke's superhuman abilities.
"Takagi Toranosuke appears in at least one other print by Kuniyoshi and one by Kuniyoshi's pupil Yoshitoshi, both in the MFA collection. Both have short texts describing him as a samurai originally from Hyūga Province who wandered through Japan and fought various monsters. It seems likely that he is a fictional character, possibly inspired by the historical figures Takagi Oriemon Shigetoshi, who founded the Hontai Hōshin Ryū school of martial arts in the seventeenth century, and his successor as head of the school, Takagi Umanosuke Shigesada. Both Oriemon and Umanosuke appear in prints as well, with fantastic adventures added to their real-life biographies.

Toranosuke's reputation as a fighter of monsters suggests that perhaps he is about to fight the whale, as in Kuniyoshi's famous triptych of Miyamoto Musashi fighting a whale. Kuniyoshi's other print of Toranosuke shows him in an underwater struggle with a creature called a 'river tiger' (kawatora); and the text of Yoshitoshi's print, which shows the hero fighting a female demon, mentions a battle with an 'evil fish' (akugyō).
Although no literary source has been found, there may be a related story in which the supernatural water monster is replaced by a whale - less unusual, but far more impressive."

"Takagi Toranosuke, a native of Hyūga and an expert in the martial arts,
is seen struggling with a kappa or kawatarō (also known as a suiko (waterbaby)).
A kappa is a composite amphibious creature said to be a native of Kyushu. It has the shell of a tortoise, scaly legs, webbed feet and most mystifying of all, an ape-like head with a hollow depression in its crown that contains a strange fluid that provides the kappa with its strength. It tends to be harmless, but if one remembers to bow to the kappa it is forced to return the bow, thus losing its potent fluid and becoming powerless.
Even as late as the 19th century, it was still widely believed that kappa actually existed. Stuffed kappa were shown in freak shows and one such exhibit was shown at the National Museum of Ethnology (Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde) in Leiden, the Netherlands, in the 1980s. The animal had been cleverly constructed and must have been quite convincing at the time."

Heroes and Ghosts: Japanese Prints by Kuniyoshi 1797-1861 by Robert Schaap,
p. 47, with an accompanying color reproduction.

An artist over in Vancouver BC, Canada, Dave Dick shares with us news of his first resin figure "Satori Kappa" - which he had both designed and sculpted, and cast in resin and finished by the folks over at Pretty in Plastic.
The completed figures will be signed, numbered, and limited to 40 pieces.

"Satori Kappa":
The Kappa is one of Japan’s yokai and are said to inhabit the country’s rivers and streams. Legendary trouble makers, Kappa are responsible for everything from general harassment to drowning people and animals, kidnapping children, and the ravishing of women. Now, not all Kappa are mischievous, murdering, kidnappers. Throughout history there have been some who have befriended human beings, helping and even teaching them.

"Satori Kappa" directly translated from Japanese means

This paper was also used on the shop-sign.
Their shop-sing was a miniature fire watchtower (hinomi yagura

Simple paper rain coats without sleeves were also called

Kappa with sleeves were made after 1665, sode-tsuki kappa The length also varied from rather long to rather short.

The Kappa makers had to prepare the paper first, mostly using strong Washi made from koozo 楮 fibers of the mulberry tree.
The paper was first impregnated with kakishibu 柿渋 persimmon extract and then coated with Tung oil. On top of that other colors could be coated or letters painted.
Many Kappa makers also sold this special paper for others to use when repairing umbrellas or raincoats.

Yanagibashi Bridge in Taito Ward Tokyo
... the Kanda River, defines Taito ward’s southern border. The Kanda flows into the Sumida River at Taito ward’s south-eastern corner. That district of Taito ward is called Yanagibashi, or “Willow Bridge.”
The bridge across the Kanda River at that point has a long history, having first been built in 1698 as the Rivermouth Exit Bridge (Kawaguchi Deguchi no Hashi). The military government, or Bakufu, that ruled Japan at that time had a spear depository in the area, meaning the bridge was also known as the Spear Depository Bridge (Yanokura-bashi) or the Spear Fortress Bridge (Yanoki-bashi).
The bridge only became known under its present name, Yanagibashi, or “Willow Bridge,” from the second decade of the 18th century. This may have been a corruption of Yanoki-bashi, and/or it may have been because of the willows that grew by the river near the bridge.
Then at the end of the nineteenth century, 1895, the old wooden bridge was replaced with an iron bridge. This was replaced again in the twentieth century, 1929, with the current iron bridge.
In the Edo era, the banks of the Kanda River were lined with inns for sailors and bar-cum-restaurants, making for a very lively district. Then following the Meiji Restoration when the regime changed from the military Bakufu to modern Western-style government, the Yanagibashi district became famous as a pleasure quarter. It was immortalized most famously by the poet, Masaoka Shiki, (1867-1902) in his poem:

KAPPA CAPE

Now also a kind of rain poncho.

- quote
According to the skeptics who believe the water-sprites are mythological, the first kappa were actually leech-babies - the term applied to still-born infants set afloat in rivers.
An alternative theory came with the appearance of Portuguese monks in the 16th century. Clad in hooded cloaks with hoods that hung down their backs like the kappa's tortoise shell, the monk's shaven pate surrounded by a crown of hair also resembled the kappa's hair-rimmed crater of water.
Capa, the Portuguese word for the monk's habit, was applied to the sprite and remains in use today.
