Kappa Ishi stones

Daisen town 大仙市 (near Yokote)

At the river pool near the bridge of Osanai village 土川心像の生内 there is a 河童石 stone where the Kappa likes to sit, with a dent in the stone.
In summer when the water gets less, the seat is quite visible and then gets forgotten.
Once in August there was a very strong rain and storm and the river pool was well flooded that even the top of the stone was hardly to be seen.
An old man 84 years of age living nearby remembered:
"Yes, it is like they say, the stone will be under water every 60 years."

Anyway, once upon a time
the home of 五郎右工門 Gorozaemon of the village kept horses and cared well for them. They even kept two very vigorous stallions, riding to the river pool morning and evening to wash them. Then one day in summer when they wanted to go back home one went wild with fear and gallopped into the horse barn. When the farmer looked, he saw that a Kappa was hanging onto the tail of the horse. They tried to get hold of the Kappa and catch him. The Kappa jumped into the fodder box and hid there.
But in the end with all the neighbours helping they got hold of the Kappa. His plate on the head had been almost dry and his power was gone.
He made the farmers understand with his best body language that he would not do any harm any more and they should let him go. So they did.
From that day on there had never been a drowning accident of children at this river pool.

Kawadoo ishi, Kawado-ishi 川童石 Kappa Stone (river child stone)

Kawadoo 川童 Kawado, short for Kawa warawa かわわらわ, also Kawaero カワエロ (in Gifu), a local dialect for the Kappa.

Once upon a time
there was a very rich farmer, 甚吉 Jinkichi, near the Tanegawa river who kept 40 horses.
One day after washing the horses at the Tanegawa river pool and trying to get them into the stable, the horses did not want to do what they did every day. When Jinkichi and his men looked closer, he saw a young Kappa crouching in a corner.
"Let's get him!" they shouted.
Then they told him all his misdeeds:
"You took the child of xyz, you killed the daughter of yxz, you also killed the horse of zyx . . . " and the Kappe admitted each one very docile and meek.
"And today you tried to pull a horse into the river, clinging to its tail, did you not?!"
But after all was said and made clear, the Kappa promised never to do any harm again to humans or animals and then they let him to.

The stone where he went back into the river is now called Kawado-ishi.

大沼郡 Onuma Gun 金山町 Kanayamamachi

At the river Nojirigawa 野尻川 there was a Kappa stone.
At the river pool called Araifuchi 洗い淵 people come to wash the horses.
Then some day a Kappa hang on to the tail of a horse.
The farmers made him promise to never come higher than the stone at the side of the bridge and he signed a contract about this. Then he could go.
But eventually this stone was washed away during a flooding.
The contract which was written with the blood from the Kappa biting off his finger had been kept in the Kannon hall 観音様のお堂, but this was also lost.


Nowadays there is a hot spring with a Kappa legend:
金山町 玉梨温泉のかっぱの湯 Kappa no Yu



About 1700 years ago, the villagers had been in distress from the malicious deeds of a Kappa.
A mendicant monk passed the village and tried to help them. He engraved ritual Sanskrit letters on a large stone 大石に梵語 to ward off the Kappa.

At this hot spring hotel, the story has become the origin of it's name
Kappa Hot Spring かっぱの湯.

Once a Kappa jumped from the かっぱ岩 Kappa boulder to grab a horse the villagers were washing, but he got caught himself.
The Kappa pleaded to let him go free and he would grant them one wish.
So the landlord said: 朱塗りの膳 "Bring me 20 food trays in red laquer, then I will pardon you.!
The next morning, the trays were delivered and the Kappa got free.

The Kappa stone for the deity Kawatachi Kami 川立神(かわたちかみ)

Once upon a time
people depended on rain water in their daily life. During a drought, plants and animals withered and humans had to perform rain rituals (amagoi) to get help.
In the Suijin shrine in our village the Shinto priest planted a stone and used the color of the moss to divine when the rain would come 苔の色で降雨.

The river 中島川 Nakashimagawa, which is a long river in Nagasaki prefecture, was a very clean river with clear drinkable water and people relied on it for all things at home and in the fields..
Then more homes where build, more people came to live here and the water became dirty. Even the Kappa, which lived upstream, could not live in the filthy water any more.
So they sometimes stormed into the human habitats and devastated the crops and things.

Since olden times the shrine had pleaded with the authorities to take care and keep the water clean. Every year on an auspicious day in May the priest invited the Kappa, gave them food and drink and entertained them like special guests - this is a special event even now 珍しい行事.
The priests caring for the temple have all been from the 渋江家 Shibue family since generations.
Some say they descend from the line of King 栗隈王 / 栗前王(くりくまのおおきみ) Kurikuma no Okimi (? - 676) .

The inner sanctuary of the shrine was cut off with sacred ropes and only the Kappa were allowed to come in there and enjoy themselves with food and drink. Some say the Shinto priests were able to see the Kappa having their feast.
The Kappa shouted with joy - kii kii - and the sound of the plates on their head was to be heard outside.
During this feast, they had to prepare a dish with bamboo shoots at any cost, with bamboo picked by the priest and only the most soft and juicy pieces offered to the kappa.
The old dry parts of the bamboo were cut into rings 竹の子の輪切り and offered to look at.

One priest had once heard the Kappa complain:
"Oh dear, these humans must have strong and hard teeth to chew the hard parts of bamboo!"

But anyway, the Kappa have since then stopped to do malicious deeds in the village.
And every time on the night before there are special visitors to the shrine or during a shrine festival, the priests places a letter on the Kappa stone, asking the Kappa to bring food 河童の献立:
"Dear Kappa san, tomorrow is a special day and we need to prepare a feast.
Please bring this and that vegetable and fish, please!"
And indeed,
next morning the food was presented on the stone - the Kappa had done well.

A Kappa came every night to the outhouse of a farmhouse and reached out (for the shirikodama anus treasure). So the farmer one night cut off the hand.
The Kappa came back and got his hand back in exchange for medicine to heal wounds.
There is a Kappa stone related to this story.

Yamano no Gaku is a festival which is held every year on September 23 at Yamano Wakahachiman Shrine.
Emperor Ojin was deified as Hachiman-jin (the tutelary god of warriors), and is said to be enshrined in all the sites dedicated to him. In the year 1244 (Kangen 2), in order to share the tutelary deity of the 宇佐八幡宮 Usahachiman Shrine in Oita Prefecture, the tutelary god of warriors was also enshrined in the Yamano Wakahachiman Shrine. This is the beginning of the Yamano no Gaku Festival.



During this festival, which has a history of more than 750 years, the shrine parishioners pray for the well-being of their families as well as a bumper harvest. Visitors to this festival will also be able to see the Gaku Uchi. The Gaku Uchi is a drum dance performed in order to ward off disasters. There are 2 versions of the Gaku Uchi. The Fue Gaku is a performance with flutes in order to pray to the repose of souls. The Uta Gaku is a traditional Japanese prayer song. The performers of the dance are referred to as Gaku Kata. The costumes of the Gaku Kata make the performers look like Kappa, a mythical water-dwelling creature.
Hence, this festival is also known as the Kappa Festival.

Once upon a time there lives a huge serpent in the pond near the mountain.
She came down to the village to get a girl age 18 every year. But the villagers finally talked her into accepting 18 mochi 餅 rice cakes instead, which they threw into the pond.
This is the origin of offering mochi in the local Shinto shrine, they say.
Other versions say it was a Kappa in the pond.

三隈川(筑後川)River Mikumagawa (Chikugogawa)

In former times Kappa were believed to bring harm to the crops of the fields near the river. So in Summer cucumbers and aubergines, prefered food of the Kappa, were consecrated at the local shrine and then floated in the river with the prayer to protect the crops.

People who were bewitched by the Kappa and had lost their good sense had to sleep in a room with a window toward the river and not use the exit on the road where a Kappa might walk along. When emptying a bucket of water outside, you had to make a loud call to the Kappa first and ask for his permisison.
Women had to behave near the river, lest the Kappa might want to seduce them. Women and girls were also not permitted to go to the river at night and expose their body in the water, because they could get pregnant that way and give birth to a Kappa Baby.

Here is one story of a boy who got bewitched by the Kappa:

Shookichi Kappa 正吉河童 Shokichi Kappa
from Bungo, Oita



Once upon a time
in the village of 日田郡竹田村 Hita Takeda there lived a 12 year old boy named Shokichi. His father was a strong sumo wrestler and Shokichi, still a child, was practicing hard too.

Then one day Shokichi was swimming in the nearby river when someone began to play sumo tricks on him. Shokichi dove down into the water and got hold of something, giving it a good punishment and then went home.

In that night when all were asleep, Shokichi woke up and felt the urge to take a bath. So he went to the river. And surprize - many children came out of the river and challenged him for a bout of sumo wrestling. Shokichi soon realized that this were the local Kappa and begun to wrestle with them.
Soon he had won against two of them. But then more than ten begun to attack him at once. and Shokichi, eager to win, wrestled with all his might.

Back home his father woke up and realized that his son was gone, so he went to the river too. He saw Shokichi on the river bank moving back and forth in a strange manner, as if he was crazy. So his father carried him home by force.

From that time on Shokichi had lost all his good senses and seemed only to wrestle with invisible adversaries. His father realized that he was bewitched and possesed by a Kappa.
Then a priest who knew about the curses of Kappa placed a sword 脇差 by the famous sword maker
郷義弘 Go no Yoshihiro beside the boy.
Shokichi begun to tremble and hid under the bed covers. When they tried to sharpen the sword, Shokichi begun to run wild again.
In the end they called a special mountain priest 修験者 to do some exorcism and the boy was finally healed.

Saiki 佐伯市

Kappa are seen often, from the river entry into the see up to the mountains. But most often between 宮野浦 Miyanoura and 色利浦 Irori-ura.
Other locations are かんじんの森 Kanjin no Mori,
the back of the main hall of temple 大願寺 Hongan-Ji,
橋の欄干 the railing of a bridge.

An old saying knows
河童に取り憑かれるから酒を飲んで返るな

Be careful of a Kappa when drunk, you might be swindled out of something.

Buzen 豊前

At the shrine Kumo Hachimangu there is an old ritual and festival called
Kappa Gaku 河童楽 "Music for the Kappa",
also called Kappa Matsuri 河童まつり.

With Kappa in the middle people walk around him with great hand fans 唐団扇 and fan him to appease the wild soul of the Kappa. After that through the 神通力 super-naural power of the Kappa the village will live in peace for another year. This festival dated back at least to the middle of the Edo period and is now the main summer festival of the shrine.

Chikugo is the origin of this kind of Kappa Gaku, which is now an important intangible folk culture asset in Oita 大分県無形民俗文化財.

Kumohachiman Shrine
located at Yabakei Town in Nakatsu City, Oita Pref. enshrines Kumo no Yahata no Okami and Myoken Okami. In the precinct stand a huge cedar tree, which is called “sennen Sugi (The 1000-year-old cedar).
The origin of the shrine dates back to the 3rd century, when legendary Empress Jingu, who was on her way back from the Korean invasion, took a rest on a huge stone at the foot of a mountain. Since then miraculous events including a white cloud rising up out of it had happened around this stone. In 703, a lot more clouds suddenly rose up from the stone and the light like arrows of lightening flashed and it took the shape of a small child-like god, which then disappeared. Having the feeling of awe at this miracle, the village people built a small purple shrine beside the stone and worshipped it respectfully. This is the origin of Kumohachiman Shrine and the Kumoishi Stone.
The main building was relocated to the present place by Masataka Kiyohara (the lord of the province) later in 983.
The shrine is famous for “Kappa Festival,” or formally named “Miyazonogaku, Miyazono Gaku 宮園楽 ,” in which traditional music is played to dedicate to the gods.
The legend has it that Heike refugees, who had been defeated in the battle with Genji clan, transformed into a Kappa and brought harm to people, so the villagers began to play music to appease their spirits.

They stand in front of a Shinto shrine to protect the precincts -
and scare away impure creatures.

The most common guardian animal at the entrance of a shrine is the
. komainu, koma inu 狛犬 lit. "Korean Dog" .

They come in a pair, one with its mouth open agyoo 阿形;
and one with its mouth closed, ungyoo 吽形, thus representing the beginning (alpha) and end (omega) of all things.

When a malicious Kappa tried to pull a horse into the water, he got caught by the farmers and had to promise to be good from now on. Then there was a fire at the temple and the Kappa rushed by, poured endless water from his plate on the head and extinguished the fire.

The Mt. Onidake Volcanic group on the south coast of Fukue Island was formed by a muzzle volcano erupting 50 thousand years ago on top of a shield volcano that had erupted five million years ago. This group is made up of the mountains Onidake, Hinotake, Shirodake, Minodake, and Usudake.
The central mountain, Onidake, is an unusual mountain covered with mountain grass instead of trees because the top is burned once every three years. It is the main sightseeing area for Fukue since guests can see the main business area of the city, the surrounding islands, and Fukue port.

Once upon a long time ago, in the village of 小栗村 Ogurimura in 諌早 Isahaya (長崎県 Nagasaki) there lived a farmer couple who did not have children.
They went to mount 八天嶽 Hattendake to pray. And then a Tengu came at night . . . well well, the woman got pregnant and bore a strong son.
The boy named Taizo became a strong Sumo wrestler. The Tengu trained him the best he could. Taizo won all the bouts in his village.
Taizo eventually went to Edo and nobody could defeat him. Taizo almost won against the strongest Sumo wrestler in Edo, 鬼ヶ岳 Onigadake, but Onigadake had asked him to let him win, so Taizo lost this one bout (and thus his Tengu power) and then all the other bouts after that and went home much ashamed.
Sometimes the villagers could hear a boulder (ゴットン石 Gotton Ishi) rumble at Mount Hattendake, where Taizo was practicing Sumo with al his former might. He could lift the boulder and carry it to the summit in no time.

Most families make a food offering every morning at the altar of the ancestors.
The ancestor deity enjoys the rice offering by looking and smelling at it.
After the offering is made to the ancestors and deities, it is eaten in gratitude by humans.
Rice is never wasted, not even a single grain of it.

When a human eats rice offerings, there emanate strong rays from his eyes. The Kappa is afraid of them and runs away. He can also not win at sumo wrestling with someone having eaten rice offerings.

There are many stories in Kyushu about the power of humans and even animals, after eating the rice offerings. and the Garappa is running away.

A story from Nagasaki, Nakashimagawa river
長崎市桜馬場町の中島川 and Maruyama Koen Park 丸川公園

The river is also called 魔の川, a deadly river.
Until about 1918 the most favorite place for swimming was a pond for fire extinguishing purposes, about 12 meters long and 6 meters wide. The pond was 2 meters deep and had a stone wall around it of about 2 meters height. Trees were planted around it and it was good to relax here in summer.



But there were also water accidents and five people died here. At that time there were rumours of Kappa and Kawauso 川獺 otters pulling children into the water, so, to be on the safe side, all swimming was forbidden.

Grandfathers of the town still tell their children:
"If you eat the rice offerings and go to the river after that,
the Kappa will not be able to pull you in."

If you hang some metal things like a sickle or a spade 鎌や鋤 at the door of the horse barn, the Kappa can not come in. Other people hang metal nails on the eaves. Farmers carry a metal sickle to protect themselves on the wet rice fields.
The Kappa especially does not like the flimmering and glittering of metal things in the sunshine.

In some regions in Kyushu it is customary after digging an irrigation pond to throw some metal things like a hatchet into it. This will prevent the Kappa from living in this pond and doing harm to the farmers.

The lord of the Takayama castle was Lord Utsunomiya Masatsuna (1447 - 1477)

Once upon a time
the Lord was on his way home late in the evening. Suddenly felt something jumping on his back and clinging to it. He tried to get rid of it, but it clung strongly.

Aramitama is the "rough spirit" of Amaterasu ōmikami.

At the riverbank 大淵 at Kurumeki town 久留女木 in Shizuoka a young monk from the Dragon Shrine / Dragon Palace helped the busy farmers with their work in the fields. The farmers offered him some soup from the water pepper plant 蓼汁, which he did not really like at all, and he died.
This gentle Kappa was kind enough to help the farmers.

Once upon a time
a Kappa lived on the lid of the kitchen stove 竈の蓋 of a good family. This Kappa, also callen Enko 猿侯, helped the family with their work. One day in a very hot summer, they prepared a soup from water pepper, which is a speciality of this region, and offered it to the Kappa. The soup was very bitter and the Kappa did not like it. Angry, he ran away.
After that the good fortune of the family declined rapidly.

On the first of the sixth lunar month, people cut the 鏡餅 Mochi rice cake offerings from the new the New Year and eat them. They are called "bones of the demons". On this day the Oni come into the homes, but the mochi are much too hard for them to chew and so they get out soon.

In various parts of Nagasaki:
On the second day of the New Year people grill オンノホネ at a fire named 鬼火焚き Onibi-yaki.
On the seventh day, people it 七草ズーシ(雑炊) rice gruel.
Once upon a time, when the Oni were repelled from 鬼ヶ島 Onigashima, people had grilled and burned their bones.
The Mochi rice cakes grilled on this day might get stuck in the throat, so with the soft rice gruel they can be swallowed easier.

The Demon bones shown in Osaka at a certain temple, and the photos shown in Nagoya and Kyushu might have been the same thing.
The temple has the bones from an upper body and looked quite scary, they say.

There are burial mounds everywhere in Miyazaki that is rich with ancient myths. Among them, Saitobaru Kofungun is one of the largest groups of burial mounds on a 70-meter-high hill running from south to north in the east of Saito, Miyazaki. A part of them are designated as special historic burial mounds. 311 burial grounds of various sizes scattered across the hill are reminder of the prosperity of ancient persons in power. Burial mounds of different styles are scattered around Osahozuka believed to be the grave of Ninigi-no-mikoto and Mesahozuka believed to be the grave of his wife Konohanasakuya-hime (both managed by the Imperial Household Agency). They indicate the existence of multiple powers that continued to build these large-scale burial mounds.

175 m-long and 18 m high at the round part, Osahozuka is the largest scallop-shaped mound in Japanese Archpelago. 180 m-long Mesahozuka (15 m high at the round part) is one of the largest mounds in Kyushu. Both are under the jurisdiction of the Imperial Household Agency and closed to the public.



Oni no Iwaya is the only tumulus left in a perfect condition in Japan and you can see the inside.
However, most of the burial mounds are preserved without excavation. ...

Ushioni 牛鬼 "bull-demon"
On his way to war in Korea, 加藤清正 Kato Kiyomasa asked the Ushioni to come with him and fight.
In the town of 宇和島 Uwajima at 泉ヶ森 Izumigamori there is Ushioni-Zuka 牛鬼塚 a mound in his memory.
Once upon a time, when Okuninushi drove out the demons and also Ushioni, his blood turned the ground all red, and even now there are 赤石 red rocks.

鹿島市 Kashima

The 鹿島の大神 Great Deity of Kashima drove out the demon of the 高天原地方 Takamagahara region. He burried its head in the ground, which is now the 鬼塚 Onizuka.
The blood of the Oni turned the sand all read.
If people eat the birds that live in this region, the family will suffer misfortune and disaster.

is a place in Japanese mythology. In Shinto, Takamagahara (or Takama no Hara) is the dwelling place of the kami. It is believed to be connected to the Earth by the bridge Ama-no uki-hashi (the "Floating Bridge of Heaven").
In Shinto, ame (heaven) is a lofty, sacred world, the home of the amatsukami. Some scholars have attempted to explain the myth of descent of the gods from the Takamagahara as an allegory of the migration of peoples. A Shinto myth explains that at the time of creation, light, pure elements branched off to become heaven (ame). Heavy, turbid elements branched off to become earth (tsuchi). The lord 鬼塚八郎右衛門 Onizuka Hachiroemon of castle 雨霧城 Amagirijo was was killed by the enemy and the castle lost.
To appease his soul, the villagers erected an Onizuka 鬼塚 Demon Mound Stone Memorial. Much later the land was redistributed for agriculture and the small shrine and mound was lost. The man who tore down the mound, Senkoya 線香屋, soon fell ill.
In his dream he heard a voice: "Why did you com here? Why did you do this?"
"I destroyed the Onizuka, that was wrong of me, I want to beg for your pardon."
On that night a ghost light appeared and the estate and all the family members were burned.
The villagers thought it must have been the revenge of the Tanuki who had stayed for so many years as guardian of the Onizuka.

戸隠山の鬼 Togakushiyama no Oni
When people were digging up the Onizuka mound, they found bones. The skull had two horns, and from the jaw some fangs were protruding for about 90 cm.
There were also bones from arms and legs.
Villagers say that 平惟茂 Taira no Koremochi had burried an Oni there. After he had killed the Demon, the village was called
Kinasa - village without any demons.
The story tells of Koremochi fighting Kijo, the demon of Mt. Togakushi.
